Prejudice

I read in a newspaper a few weeks ago, that the ARMY was recruiting at
Europe's biggest Gay Festival--MANCHESTER PRIDE.
A SPOKESPERSON SAID:'they need not fear intimidation, prejudice or bullying.....'
So all of the taboos are being stipped away---BAR ONE.
PROSTITUTION.
The fear of being 'found out' or identified as a sex worker, thwarts all kinds of advancement in the world---and it really must stop.

Colour, creed, sexual orientation or even having been a criminal-----these do not stop people from doing what they want to do.
When is Britian going to grow up???

My M.P could be black, (openly)gay or an ex jailbird----but i bet he/she couldn't have been a sex worker.
Things simply have to change.........

Hi Leticia,

In some respects and to SOME EXTENT I do agree with what you've written, although there are (I believe), some inaccuracies.

To beign with - being an "ex-jailbird" frquently (and rightly) DOES stop advancement in the world. There are many crimes that require a period of good conduct before the proverbial "slate is wiped clean" - but until that period has expired and the conviction has become "spent", advancement in the real world is well and truly thwarted. Once that conviction is spent, the "ex-jailbird" no longer has to declare that crime and I dare say that if he/she could prove that advancement in the world had been halted becuase of that "spent" conviction, then I suppose they'd have rights to redress through the tribunal system and/or courts.

With regard to sex workers - well, I know of a porn star who recently ran for office in the United States. Would I also be correct in thinking that a former prime minister/president in Italy was a formenr Porn performer too???

I fully acknowledge that there is a huge amount of prejudice against sex workers and I absoluely agree that it is out of synch with modern times. But the times ARE changing - all things adult industry related ARE gaining greater social respectability and I am sure that as these things are challenged, the walls will begin to crumble... There are challenges ahead but it's not always as cut and dried as it seems - it is the gutter press that has MUCH to answer for!

And how could I forget the fascinating Lindi St. Clair! She not only stood for office, she had her own political party! OK, so the chances of her getting voted into office were perhaps minimal in the extreme, but nevertheless, the opportunity exists!

Wasn't it Cynthia Payne that had her own party?

I'm sure its time we at least had a "Sex Workers Pride" in this country. When we stop fearing being "outed" we can start to be accepted?

Yes, La Ciccolina (Italian porn star) stood for parliament---i DID actually allude to it in my book.
And Yes Cynthia (who i was only chatting to today) also stood and was affiliated to Screaming Lord sutch's MONSTER RAVING LOONEY PARTY.
Lindy St Clair---sure---but it's being taken SERIOUSLY that eludes us.
I was only thinking the same thing myself---having a grand parade of PRIDE IN WHO WE ARE
(another thing i mentioned in my worthy tome)---but WHO WOULD COME?????
So many workers are ashamed/or feel the heat of shame foisted apon them-----.
We, (both women AND men who work in the industry) are unsung heroes----we really do, in many cases hold the fabric of society TOGETHER.
WE SHOULD ALL BE GIVEN A PAT ON THE BACK (that i WOULD like to see).

I have difficulty reconciling my gross habits with my net income
