The Term - Courtesan

I've literally JUST finished reading a book by Tracy Quan called "Diary Of A Manhattan Call Girl". In terms of literary brilliance it's nothing special at all - but in terms of insight and entertainment - commendable!

There is a post on the messageboard under general chat by LucyB reflecting on the term "courtesan" and whether it applies today ( http://www.punterlink.com/ftopict-5906.html ). Undoubtedly, I think the literal interpretation of the word - and "escorts" that fall into that category - DO exist, but I am certain that it is being used out of context today. The true courtesan's - in todays media-rich society - are probably extremely secretive, due in no small part to the unsavoury elements of the gutter press who are always looking for a "juicy story"; always looking to publicly humiliate and destroy someone of prominence.

Sadly, in today's world, everybody in every field, in every industry, in every walk of life - everybody constantly tries to elevate their status and position - and the world is becoming a more confusing place for it. Helen Jones (in the same thread) puts the point across very eloquently.

And this all leads me onto the book I have just read. It's a light hearted "Bridget Jones" style read that touches on prostitution on several levels. It illustrates quite clearly that a sex worker is NOT just a sex worker.

I do take issue with Helen, however!! I don't think it rests with the individuals to define what category of sex worker they fall into. I think their style and service SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. Sure, the individual may term themselves whatever they wish to term themselves, but ultimately, as the saying goes, "the proof is in the pudding"!

So term yourself what you will, in the end "the truth will out" - and with the advent and growth of the internet there is no hiding behind a self-appointed classification!

On a personal note - Dreamweaver HAS at last arrived and I'm going to be a busy boy over the next few days!!!

Aaahhhhh...... semantics and marketing! Words will always have fluid meanings. Very few word mean the same today as they did 300 or so years ago. Very few words mean the same to each person. Meanings will always come from experience and that lies beyond words... so go eat pudding!

As for Courtesans- undoubtedly they exist. But not in the same way they once did. Maybe they're the footballers wives? The women who sleep their way to the top? The groupie who marries the rockstar?

The way they differ from escorts, prostitutes et al (my interpretation anyway) is that they never took money for sex or indeed time and companionship. Rather they were "kept" in a similar way as a mistress, but not always just by one gentleman.

Escorts didn't exist then. Although the brothels of London were far more opulent than any "luxury apartment" these days. I wonder if escorts had existed whether the gentlemen would have bothered with all the proprietry and games that were involved back then?
