Bad days...

Well, it's been a rather uneventful week for me - hard at work on the website (which is nearing completion - hope this isn't viewed as an advert!!!) but not a great deal esle other than trips to the gym and so on and so forth.

And then this morning arrives!

Before I describe my bad day it's worth me giving you some background. I've got a dodgy knee! For years I have been a runner - to quite a high standard, competitively and recreationally. Given my build, which is definitely not that of the stereotypical runner, I've achieved some good times at all distances from 10K through to marathon. This year's London marathon went very, very badly. So badly that I ended up at the hospital. I've suffered knee problems for about 10 years or more (best guess) and had never sought medical help for it, I just ran through it. Anyway, after 3 months of to-ing and fro-ing, seeing several consultants and physios along the way it has been established that the condition of my knee is what they'd expect to find in a person 30 years older than myself. I've now been told in no uncertain terms that if I do not stop running (which is a joke as I haven't run since April) I will wake up one morning 3 weeks or 3 years hence and I will NOT be able to walk. It's that serious. There is nothing they can do save for a knee repalcement that will not be done because of my young (ahem!) age -34 and I can't say I find the prosepct at all appealing anyway!

So I've taken up cycling. Yesterday, after spending a couple of weeks making a selection I bought my new baby - a 600 competition race bike. I've only ever ridden a casual mountain bike before. Not only is the riding position different it also has these weird "locking" pedals - it locks your feet in and you have to swivel your heel to unlock. I was warned that I'd find this difficult so I practised against a wall for a while - no problems, took her for a 10 minute spin last night - no problems. This morning I embraked on a 20 mile "round the houses" trip to the gym. 19+ miles and everything was wonderful - I got within 400 yards of the gym beofre I fell of the bloody thing! A lorry reversing into a shop car park, I slowed down hoping he'd clear in time - I slowed to such a speed that, with my momentum gone and my feet loced into the pedals - DOWN and OVER I went... Highly embarassing, but worse than that, I'd badly scuffed the right side of my new baby.

In they gym for an hour and out I come ready to put the episode behind me... walk out to the road, mount up - push off... struggle to find the second pedal - lose momentum, slow down - ooops... DOWN and OVER again, this time before I've even set off - this time BADLY scuffing the left side of my new baby and badly bruising my elbow too.

Finally got home, took the dog out - she's off the lead, minding our own business when this little brown dog appears - barks at her and WHOOSH - my doggie is setting about this other dog with gusto. She's throwing it around and not listening to a word I'm screaming. An old man appears and starts whipping my girl with his lead... I eventually get hold of the pair of them (the dogs) only to cop for the blokes lead and a snap off of both dogs!

Perhaps I should have an early night tonight!!!! Here's looking forward to tomorrow!

Lol- those little dogs are evil I swear.....I get the same thing having a butch dog, its always her fault even though she's nothing but friendly.

Have you tried booking a Pilates session? There are a lot of pilates exercises that work on the alignment of your knees and help strengthen the surrounding muscles to support it? Maybe worth having a chat with a private instructor? Will also help your balance ;o)

Actually... now you come to mention it, I recall a year or two back, having read something about Pilates, thinking that it MIGHT be beneficial... but that was back when I'd just begun to acknowledge to myself that I was in trouble and before I'd sought medical opinion. I was clutching at every straw from possibly getting a set of orthotics through to buying the most expensive pair of super-dooper trainers and I remember the article now.

Surprisingly, none of the lealth professionals have suggested it even though i am still under phyiso for the purpose of strengthening specific muscles that will supposedly help control the pain around my patella. Thanks for the advice - I'll certainly look into it further!

But as for my dog... well, she's "essentially" friendly - it's just soemtimes she obviously isn't!!!
