Here's a reminder to make sure you put out all of you gas pilot lights when you try bug bombs in your home to keep out the summer pests.

Man blows up apartment spraying for bugs? Mon Jul 21, 1:35 PM ET

A New Jersey man trying to exterminate insects in his apartment blew it up instead, the New York Daily News reported on Monday.

Isias Vidal Maceda was unhurt in the incident, but 80 percent of his apartment was destroyed, Eatontown, New Jersey police told the newspaper.

The accident occurred as Maceda was spraying for pests in his kitchen. Somehow the bug spray ignited a blast that blew out the apartment's front windows and triggered a fire that quickly spread, the newspaper said.

Police told the newspaper that the Saturday blaze also caused smoke damage to the apartment above

Wow! What a story Paul. I also heard about this story from a friend of mine. Yeah, definately will have to be careful with bug sprays. I know that when I spray poison for different bugs around inside my place; I make sure that I don't spray around heat ;and make sure to have fresh air coming from the outside by opening the windows and doors to air out. Also, electric bugzappers are good to use to cut down on the amount of bugs. It definately cuts down on the amount of bug spray too. I also use an air purifier to get rid of any remnants of the smell of the bugspray. It definately isn't safe to breathe in those fumes of the bug spray.

IMHO you need to spray a very large volume of flammable liquid if you want to blow up your house. His apartment had to be mostly destroyed by a fire not a blast.

As I know these liquid sprays under high pressure are generally very flammable, not only bug sprays.

Yeah, you're right about that kotikkk. Using caution with all under high pressure sprays is very important so that we stay safe.

At least I've never seen a spray cylinder without a warning sign on it. Another matter is that some sprays can be much more explosive than others. This difference cannot be clearly represented in the markings. Just a bug spray, not a gas for igniters or something like that - and it blows out large windows and even causes a quickly spreading fire. However, it could be some other reasons for quick spreading, as same as for those windows...

Every one is right on this subject. The ingridents for the insecticide are generally flamable when mixed together and put under pressure to spray them. Since Argon and Freon are inert gases and help to cause global warming they are no longer used. The ingridents used to propel the liquid into the air is flamabe and can burts into flame when it comes into contact with an open flame. Since this guy had set off bug bombs it would have been like throwing a match into a room that had been sprayed with gas. KaBloom. Probably blew most of the place to hell, there wasn't much mention of a fire at the place.

Hi Paul, I am very glad to hear that they no longer use Argon and Freon since they were harmful to the environment.

And the new ingredients are harmful to people's apartments sometimes.
:)))

Some scientists do not consider freons as an important factor in the global process of Warming. Some of them even neglect inert gases at all but I think it isn't right. All factors must be taken to account.

Thanks Kotikkk, I didn't know that the new ingredients were just as harmful as well. Wow, you never know what's safe anymore when it comes to some products. I know I'm going to be a lot more careful in choosing products, look at a lot more labels for ingredients as well as researching online about products too.

Freons are not so ecology unfriendly as scientists said in the previous century. There are plenty of much more powerful factors for global warming as Kotikk says.
